Happy August! Below are some new and ongoing volunteer opportunities. Special emphasis is placed on volunteers for to help with FISH of Galesburg, which would some  volunteers to help coordinate and assist volunteers. We also invite you to join us at two separate trainings. More information can be found below.

Requests and Information in this e-newsletter:
FISH of Galesburg has two immediate volunteer needs:
  1. A person willing and able to be train as computer/phone worker for the Wednesday morning shift- 9:50 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Training can take place any shift with a current trained computer /phone person.
  2. A volunteer coordinator is needed. This involves getting to know the numerous volunteers, assisting with the placement of volunteers in the shifts, and helping phone substitutes if needed.  A willingness to be a FISH of Galesburg Board member and attend Board meetings one late afternoon per month.

Children's Literature Festival will be Tuesday, October 18th at the RiverCenter in Davenport. We will be seeking volunteers for the day of the event, but also are seeking individuals who would be interested in serving on a team organizing this event, where over 600 school children get to workshop with professional children's authors and illustrators. In particular, we are seeking an individual or two, who would be willing to organize the snacks and drinks provided for the presenters and volunteers on the day of the event (i.e. ordering cheese tray, cookies, water, coffee). RSVP will be holding a free Tutor/Mentor Training. The training will give the attendee basic knowledge of tutoring and mentoring techniques, protocol, and expectations. Information will also be presented on our Pen Pal program.
 
This training will be beneficial to all current and future tutors and mentors. It is open to all members of the community. John Border, Community Education Specialist, Davenport Community Schools and Joy Andrews of CASI’s “Listen to Me Read” program will be there to share information on their programs.
There is no charge for this training, but we would like to have you reserve your spot by Wednesday, September 7th

FREE TRAINING!
"Newly Revised Elements of Effective Mentoring Practice" 
Thursday, September 22 at Butterworth Center
 The Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring outlines six national, evidence-based standards that mentoring programs should follow in an effort to best serve youth.
After this session, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the six key elements to effectively create and manage a youth mentoring program
  • Critically analyze their programs and brainstorm ideas to strengthen or change program delivery
  • Meet and/or get reacquainted with the Illinois Mentoring Partnership and learn about ways we support programs throughout the state via the National Mentoring Resource Center as well as applying for the Gold Star designation for Illinois mentoring program
Check-in is from 8:30 – 9 a.m. Light refreshments will be served. Parking is available.

The Quad City Botanical Center in Rock Island has quite a few volunteer openings
Gardens

Weed Warriors wanted - please join us in the never ending battle against weeds that just won't die!  Great for stress management and releasing pent up energy - work alongside our garden team, learn as you go and help keep our gardens beautiful! Shifts are Monday to Saturday 9 a.m. - Noon and 1-4 p.m.; other time slots can be accommodated. Be sure to dress according to the weather and wear closed-toe shoes for safety.  We have the tools-we just need you!

 

Admissions & Gift Shop

Our gift shop is seeking a cashier for Monday mornings from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. The front desk is a great place to meet new people from all over the country, as well as your own backyard. Tasks include welcoming guests and taking admission and gift shop payments. Full training will be provided. Timeslot can be filled once a month or as often as you like.

 

Education

Our education department is seeking individuals comfortable giving presentations, learning programs, and giving tours for school groups or adult programming. We are in special need of Sunday afternoon educational leaders the first Sunday of every month to help facilitate children's activities and crafts. 
 

August 7, 1-3 p.m.: Sunday Funday Family programming

July 31, 1-3 p.m.: Mississippi Madness, learning about the river

 

Special Events

Little Conductors Day is Sunday, August 14, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., and we need 5 volunteers to help with kids crafts.

The Quad City Botanical Center is seeking volunteers to serve on committees - a number of opportunities are available.

Silver Linings Bell Choir performs on Thursday afternoons throughout the summer. You are welcome to join the audience at these free concerts:

Thursday, Aug. 4th 1:15 p.m., Iowa Masonic Home, Bettendorf
Thursday, Aug. 11th, 2:00 p.m., Davenport Lutheran Home

New bell ringers are encouraged to join the Bell Choir. If the group (which practices Thursday mornings at CASI)
gets a few more players, they can add an entire octave of bells to their arrangements! Plus, this is a great group with a great sound! Listen to a bit of one of their rehearsals--click HERE!
